E-commerce Growing Rapidly in 2009

August 11, 2009

Parsippany, NJ, August 11, 2009 – INTTRA, the leading e-commerce platform for the ocean freight industry, has seen the volume of container orders grow by 22% in the first half of 2009 to reach an average of nearly 300,000 per week.

The growth in e-commerce adoption has been driven by a 20% increase in the total number of new users joining the INTTRA network and by existing users increasing their volume by taking greater advantage of the wide range of tools already available on the platform.

"The global recession that has gripped the industry has caused carriers and shippers to re-evaluate their business processes with an immediate goal of removing costs to protect margins and to create better performance," said Ken Bloom, INTTRA's CEO. INTTRA estimates that replacing manual processes for managing ocean shipment initiation with electronic processes could save the industry at least $5 billion a year by 2013.

The ocean container shipping industry has enjoyed virtually uninterrupted and impressive growth since the birth of the container box in 1956. But now many different systems and business processes that were created to handle the growth are threatening the industry's ability to operate with lower volumes in an efficient way. The availability of an industry-wide platform helps provide a standardized system to connect carriers and shippers at low cost.

"Good trends, such as the adoption of electronic processes, accelerate in bad markets. By getting a head start now, the industry will find it is eliminating costs and when the recovery begins, the industry-wide network will create even greater savings," said Bloom.
